STEEL folding chair got it's name from the Dutch word for wooden handles. And that's what this chair was made from.
This modern and unique folding chair is made with re-purposed, wooden broom handles. It is a wonderfully simple concept that creates a modest, refined piece of furniture which is practical and surprising all at the same time. It was designed in the Netherlands and celebrates it's Dutch heritage. 'Steel' actually means 'handle' in Dutch and that is exactly what this chair is made of. You can choose a brand new chair or create your own bespoke chair from old broom handles.
The white version of the chair feels modern, fresh and clean. It is a beautiful addition to any home with Scandinavian colour palettes or alternatively as a calming influence on a more colourful home. The natural colour and texture of the wood becomes visible where the handles have been cut in a concave shape, which also makes the seat and back rest comfortable to sit on for longer periods of time. For a folding chair, this offers you a great level of comfort.
The inspiration for this chair came from tool handles. To me, they represent simplicity, integrity, craftsmanship and functionality. Tool handles are made for a specific purpose without much aesthetic consideration and yet they are very beautiful. While thinking of a way to create the typically concave shape of seat and back rest, I decided to carve it out of the handles. By doing so I created a fascinating pattern and a wonderful contrast between painted or patinated wood and clean, pristine wood.—Reinier de Jong
