Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez are known for their aplomb in treating furniture as a global decorative topic. Their pieces evoke a sedimented “living culture” rooted in borgeois comfort and hospitality. S.Marco chair, Meran armchair and Vigilius collection mirror the charming image of those spaces, once called “fumoir”.
Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez
Matteo Thun was born in 1952 in Bolzano and was one of the Kokoschka’s pupils at the academy in Salzburg. In 1975 he graduated in architecture at Florence University with Adolfo Natalini. He moved to Milan in 1978, and collaborated with Ettore Sottsass, with whom in 1981 he founded Sottsass associates and the Memphis Group. From 1983 to 1996 he held the chiar of design at the University of applied Arts in Vienna. Having completed his collaboartion with Memphis, in 1984 he opened his own architecture, design and graphics studio in Milan. He was awarded the compasso d’oro three times. Creative director from 1990 to 1993 for swatch side hotel Hamburg, Hotel of the year 2001. Selected for the compasso d’oro 2004 for girly by Catalano. He was officially recognised by the interior design hall of fame in December 2004. Gala spa award 2004 for his " vigilius mountain resort”. wallpaper design award 2004 for his " vigilius mountain resort”. panda d’oro, wwf italia award for his " vigilius mountain resort” 2005. “best hotel opened in the year”, “worldwide hospitality award”, for radisson sas hotel frankfurt, 2005. new look for the façade of the “cinema building” for the 61st and the 62nd cinema art exhibition, venice, september 2004/2005. he collaborates with aeg, alessi, artemide, brunner, bulgari, campari, driade, flos, hausbrandt, illy, kartell, keramag, lavazza, magis, martinstoll, mienl, rapsel, rosenthal, schödes, silhouette, swatch, united office, villeroy and boch, wmf, zucchetti e catalano, zumtobel. Rodriguez born and raised in Spain, Antonio Rodriguez studies in Valencia and Milan. In 1989 he founded the estudio valencia a6 for product design. in 1993 he moves to milan and starts working with the taipei design center, studio matsunaga and ugolini design. from 2000 to 2005 he teaches at the ied - istituto Europeo di design in Milan. From 2003, he was head of product design and partner of Matteo Thun & Partners before partnering with Matteo Thun under the new industrial design firm mtd-r and the architecture, interior and industrial design studio mtd-r shanghai in China.
