Out of the fascination by those big rattan and cane armchairs so diffused in south-eastern asia, patricia urquiola makes a sophisticated review operation.

Volumes expand, braids are doubled, patterns appear unexpectedly and gracefully fragmentary with the seductive tactility of natural materials.


Patricia Urquiola

Born in oviedo, spain, she studied at the faculdad de arquitectura de madrid and at the polytechnic in milan, where she graduated in 1989 with a thesis supervised by achille castiglioni. from 1990 to 1992 she assisted in the courses held by achille castiglioni and eugenio bettinelli, both at the milan polytechnic and at the ensci in paris. from 1990 to 1996 she headed the product development department of de padova, and with vico magistretti designed the “flower”, “loom sofa” and “chaise longue” products. in 1993 she opened an associated firm together with m. de renzio and e. ramerino, designing architectural projects, interiors, showrooms and restaurants. from 1996 to 2000 she coordinated the design group at lissoni associati. in 2001 she founded her own firm, devoted primarily to design, exhibit mountings and architecture. in parallel, she held conferences at the domus academy, the colegio de arquitectos in madrid, the faculdad de arquitectura in madrid, the alvar aalto academy in helsinki and at designex comfia in melbourne. in 2003 she held an important one-woman show at the galleria alina espacio in majorca, spain, followed shortly thereafter by another at the pakhuisamsterdam, holland. among international awards, we cite the “best system” prize (cologne) for the fjord collection designed for moroso (2003), “designer of the year” for the elle deco international design awards (2003), the “good design award” – chicago athenaeum – for the bague lamp for foscarini (2003). she designs for moroso, agape, b&b, de padova, de vecchi, driade, foscarini, kartell, mdf, molteni, san lorenzo. among her display designs we cite her works for moroso, knoll, marks & spencer (london), molteni, sand (denmark), somma and roberto torretta (spain).
