Ilkka Suppanen was born in Kotka, Finland, where he studied Architecture at the Technical University of Helsinki and Interior and Furniture Design at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. In 1995 he founded the Studio Suppanen in Helsinki. The Studio develops integrated strategic design projects in the areas of interior and product design, concept design and architecture. Ilkka Suppanen works on both architecture and design. Since 1996 he has taught design at the University of Art and Design of Helsinki. He has held courses and lectured at several universities, including Harvard, and is one of the most renowned contemporary Finnish designers. Ilkka Suppanen has also received numerous international awards including, recently, the Swedish Bruno Mathsson Prize and the top prize in the Red Dot Award: the Best of the Best . In 1997 he founded the Snowcrash design cooperative along with three colleagues, and in the same year the Snowcrash team won the Young Designer of the Year Award in Germany and the Young Finland Award. Suppanen’s work has been exhibited in numerous shows worldwide including the Venice Architecture Biennale and MoMA in New York. His works have been widely covered in reviews by the international press and in numerous publications; they can be admired in permanent collections at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum of Applied Arts in Cologne, the Georges Pompidou Centre and other exhibition venues. Suppanen currently continues to work from his studio where he creates projects for clients all over the world.
