The interplay between positive and negative space is central to in Between, Sami Kallios chair design for &tradition.

Its back and side panels provide
a concrete shape and support, but forms are created equally by the gaps in between them. Kallios expertise in traditional woodworking craftsmanship is evident in the chair. in Between is produced using two classical techniques; compression molding (making it light and thin, yet strong) and woodturning (a technique that uses a lathe to achieve greater detail).
Sami Kallio, with his solid grounding in the traditional woodworking techniques of Scandinavia and his eye for ingenious detail, has proven to be the ideal candidate to design the first wooden chair in &traditions stable. The upholstered seat is the perfect addition to the wooden chair: it embraces modern lifestyles and long, cosy dinners around the dining table, without compromising the chairs light and elegant expression.

Sami Kallio

An award-winning designer with a studio based in Gothenburg, Kallio designs furniture and interiors translating classical shapes into contemporary expressions with an industrial aesthetic which resonate with a modern- minded audience.
Man and machine both play a role in many of Kallio’s creations. Merging modern methods of industrial manufacturing with handcrafted techniques. The result is a refreshing balance between the past and the present.
The In Between Chair and Table offer a wink to the past in a timeless design with a focus forward. The interplay between positive and negative space is central to the concept, where forms are created by the shape as well as gaps in between. “This series fuses tradition with revolution, one of the founding principles at &tradition,” notes Martin Kornbek Hansen. “The crafting techni- ques and use of wood are steeped in our Nordic heritage. An important aspect of our designs which we are keen to keep alive.”

Craft meets art. Function meets form. Material meets potential.
