Appearing at first glance to be a solid block of wood, the Gemma storage box is a delightful trompe l’oeil.
To the untrained eye, Gemma is a simple, solid block with no apparent way to gain entry – prying eyes won’t go anywhere near it. The lid is held in place via a magnet, meaning it is perfectly integrated, with no hinges or joins visible. 7.5 cm deep and 13 cm long, it’s spacious enough to hold a trove of your belongings.
Born 1977 in Blackpool, Gemma Holt graduated from both the Manchester Metropolitan University and the Royal College of Art in London, eventually working in Martino Gamper’s internationally renowned studio. Holt’s work challenges our ideas of the conventional form: her Gemma storage box, which appears at first glance to be a solid block of wood, is a typical trompe l’oeil.
