A seat and its double: on one side it encloses and protects, on the other it opens up and welcomes.
A clear ambivalence which elaborately separates form and content, image and concept, the name hood hints at this double function. The hood is both an ancient and contemporary urban symbol; it protects and frames the face but it can also hide it, signalling a refusal to communicate or interact. The impact is intense, and everything is a game of contrast: the three dimensional seat seems to imply the two-dimensionality of a drawing, the overlapping colours don’t divide but complement, tension isn’t alleviated but stabilized. Clarissa is a dynamic easy chair,ready for action but open to relaxation, the temporary suspension of activity. A combination of competition and collaboration, provocation and aesthetics.
Injected flame-retardant foam with frame in steel. Swivel base in varnished steel Riffle brown or Sand Grey or Oxidored. As an alternative only the steel Riffle brown swivel base can be covered with a base covering in ash or oak. The cover on the shell is not removable. The removable quit is fixed to the cover of the armchair with a zip.
Patricia Urquiola was born in Oviedo, Spain, and currently lives and works in Milan. She studied at the faculty of Architecture at the Madrid Politecnico and at Politecnico di Milano, where she graduated in 1989. From 1990 to 1996 she served as assistant professor to Achille Castiglioni and Eugenio Bettinelli at the Politecnico di Milano. During this time she has also led the
product development department at DePadova, where she designed together with Vico Magistretti. In 2001 she opened her studio of product design, display, and architecture. She has worked with leading manufacturers.
Urquiola has received prizes including Designer of the Year, Elle Decor International Design Awards, Chicago Athenaeum Good Design Award, and the Design Prize Cologne.
