The Bookmatch Table by Philippe Malouin channels the natural beauty of freshly sawn timber. It celebrates craftsmanship, and yet is a design for modern manufacture and contemporary living. Featuring two perfectly mirrored oak veneer boards with edges engineered to give a waney (untrimmed) effect and a construction that locks with two wooden wedges, the Bookmatch Table is a perfectly considered homage to traditional carpentry skills. Visually hefty, although actually light, and seemingly raw and crafted, but in reality highly engineered, the Bookmatch Table is a sophisticated piece of furniture for design devotees.
Philippe Malouin
Canadian Philippe Malouin set up his studio in 2009 after working for English designer Tom Dixon. His diverse portfolio includes tables, rugs, chairs, lights, art objects and installations. Living and working in London, where he operates his design studio and teaches at the Royal College of Arts, Philippe’s diverse background is reflected in his unique design style, which celebrates imperfections and stark contrasts, clearly visible in his first piece for Hem – the Bookmatch Table. Among his many achievements, Philippe has won the W Hotels ‘Designer of the Future’ Award and the Wallpaper ‘Best Use of Material’ Award.
