“The Afteroom Chair is an homage to Bauhaus and functionalism. The simplicity of its design combined with the quality of materials is what’s important. We embraced the challenge of designing something minimalistic with clean lines, without in any way compromise its comfort. In that sense we’ve looked towards classic Scandinavian features as inspiration”, says Hung-Ming.
The rounded details such as the seat and flexible back support, both in wood, contrast the solid steel frame. And when looking at the chair, it’s difficult to differentiate what is what, due to the designers’ attention to detail.
Chen-Yen Wei: “Afteroom Chair is based on the concept of reducing the amount of materials to the minimum and by doing so pushing the aesthetic appearance to the maximum. It’s a designer’s job to develop functional objects without compromising the aesthetics and it’s important never to look back, unless it’s for the purpose of finding very good references, of course.

Afteroom are on mission to create products that will become more treasured as the years pass. “We want to create design you can grow old with,” explain designers Hung-Ming Chen and Chen-Yen Wei, adding: “Simplicity and honesty are at the heart our design philosophy.” Hailing from Taiwan, they were lured to Stockholm by an obsession with Scandinavian design.
