Kettal - Vimini seating collection

Patricia Urquiola designs basket chair for Kettal

Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola has designed a collection of outdoor furniture inspired by 1950s wicker basket chairs for Barcelona brand Kettal.

It’s called Vimini after the Italian word for "wicker" and the collection includes a dining armchair, sofa and side tables. They all have a rough wooden frame and the basket shapes are woven using traditional braiding techniques.

The sofa and armchair both have a wide lip running around the back and arms. Each front and back pair of legs is bridged with a piece of wood that runs under the lip of the arms to support the structure. The side tables have a wicker base of two conjoined cylinders and come in three different sizes.

Patricia was inspired by Danish designer Nanna Ditzel’s award-winning Basket chair, originally presented at the Milan Triennale in the 1950s. The hand-braided wicker armchair features an oak frame and was reissued by Kettal for Salone del Mobile in 2014 along with an additional outdoor version.
