Gemla - Nordic Chair

Gemla produces stackable ash wood armchair

Nordic is a stackable armchair made from steam-bent and carved ash wood produced by Swedish furniture brand Gemla.

Its two back legs are carved out of solid ash and gently curve out as they lead up to the slim backrest, framing an empty space in the back of the chair. Two pieces of steam bent ash serve as unimposing armrests glued to the outer edges of the back legs. It’s available with or without armrests, and you can stack both versions on top of eachother.

Nordic was designed by Jakob Thau and Sami Kallio of Danish-Finnish studio Thau & Kallio. The pair of independent designers have been friends for 15 years and set up their studio in 2015 after attending a year long wood bending workshop at Carl Malmsten design school in Stockholm.

Nordic comes in white, grey, dark blue, dark brown and black oil, and the veneer seat is also available with a vegetable tanned leather pad. The chair was presented at Stockholm Furniture Fair, where Thau & Kallio also showed their new Yksi stacking chair for Danish brand Fredericia.
