Editions Milano - Piani collection

Cane ovals sit within iridescent frames

Italian brand Editions Milano has made a collection of furniture designed by Patricia Urquiola, featuring neat oval tabletops and shelves of cane supported by a shimmery wooden frame.

Called Piani, the collection consists of side and console tables as well as a bookshelf. They each have a shimmering lacquered wooden frame with a cane surface fixed on top, and the console and bookshelf units have shelves slotted in between the flat rectangular legs. Each oval of cane has a prominent wooden border with a slight lip above and below.

The cane weave has enough space between the strands that you can see silhouettes of the dark frame through the shelves, working with the opalescent lacquer to add further depth and movement to each unit.

Patricia has created contemporary takes on wicker furniture elsewhere this year, having designed the Vimini collection of outdoor basket chairs for Spanish brand Kettal in May.
