Brintons - Coast & Shales carpet collection

Timorous Beasties designs coast-inspired carpets

Scottish design duo Timorous Beasties has created a carpet for British brand Brintons based on an abstract aerial view of a coastline.

It’s called Coast & Shale and it’s splattered with splotches of deep ocean blue, algae green and shimmering gold to capture the wealth of life and colour found in and around the ocean. In one version, there’s a clear divide between deep, dark sea and land, and another version is much lighter overall with smaller specks of colour including a soft rock grey against a white backdrop.

Coast & Shale is part of Brinton’s new Craigend collection, named after the home of Timorous Beasties' design studio in Glasgow, Craigend Place. The range debuted at Clerkenwell Design Week and takes its cues from natural surfaces like sand dunes, moss, and waves of water. Other carpets in the collection feature patterns inspired by undulating waves of heated moire silk and bubbling layers of molten lava.

The carpets are all made of wool and suitable for contract use. The designers tried to create patterns that could be adapted to any scale and shape for bespoke projects, intentionally developing motifs that could be worked around the corner in a hotel corridor for example.

The Scottish designers are known for their bold patterns inspired by nature and the Craigend collection is their third creation for Brintons. It was presented in Clerkenwell in a pop-up installation designed by London practice Studio Shaw Architects.
