Married co-founders of their namesake brand Mette and Rolf Hay met as colleagues working for Gubi. Mette grew up in her parent’s furniture store in Jutland, while Rolf is a self-taught design obsessive who began his career working with various design brands in Copenhagen. Now living in the Danish capital, they work instinctively to curate and produce a collection that makes the quiet, ordinary moments of everyday life a little more interesting.
HAY is driven by the inspiring people that the co-founders meet; they spot rising talents early on, giving them a platform for developing comprehensive collections with the support of a brand that has an internationally recognisable identity. One of their first collaborations was with Dutch practise Scholten & Baijings, who work as a driving force behind HAY’s distinct visual identity across product, furniture, graphic and exhibition design.
Mette and Rolf produce furniture for people like themselves, recognising the way people live in urban, modern environments such as smaller living spaces, nomadic lifestyle and co-working areas. The Bouroullec Brothers’ Can collection is a flat pack piece of furniture with removable cushions allowing it to double as a sofa bed, while the Tray Side Table features a removable top which can be used as a tray. The collections are celebrations of details that provide practical solutions without compromising on aesthetics.
