Woven in limited runs on jacquard looms at socially responsible, historic mills in Scotland and England, each creation tells an uplifting story inspired by the studios backgrounds in in carefully considered optimistic colour combinations.
Each design is inspired by the geometry and simplicity of London’s iconic Brutalist architecture and is a continuation of Granite + Smoke’s earlier wall tapestries and blankets inspired by art, architecture and fashion.
Behind the name
Granite + Smoke is Lindsey Hesketh and Claire Canning; life-long friends and design professionals. The studio, founded in 2019, draws from their multi-disciplinary backgrounds, Lindsey is an architect who runs an award winning RIBA practice in Aberdeen, and Claire in London, works in interiors and fashion textiles, previously for Paul Smith & Alexander McQueen.
The name evokes The Granite City (Aberdeen) + The Big Smoke (London); mythical cities where Lindsey + Claire live and design - two elements in contrast and harmony.
We are committed to preserving traditional crafts and skills, working with Scottish and UK manufacturers who embed positive social and environmental principles. With fair-trade principles at the heart of the production process, we choose partners who support local supply chains and prioritise communities and worker well-being.
