Timber Wave, SW7
- Designed by: Arup
- Category: Commercial design
- Location: London, United Kingdom
Client: American Hardwood Export Council
This striking three-dimensional latticework structure was designed by AL_A and Arup to echo the vast and ornamental form of the V&A’s arched Grand Entrance on Cromwell Road and to demonstrate the strength of American red oak timber, never before used structurally at this scale. At 12m high, Timber Wave features curved laminated elements which were pushed to the limit to create a self-supporting form, using furniture-making techniques such as lamination – but on a vast scale. A balance was achieved between architectural quality, structural efficiency of the complex geometry – using a natural material with varied strength characteristics – and fast-build fabrication and assembly methods.
