Ash Sakula, working in partnership with Garbe, has won an architect/developer masterplanning competition for the development of a £45m cultural quarter in Colchester, adjacent to Rafael Viñoly’s Firstsite arts centre. The new quarter, alongside the Roman wall, will link Firstsite to Colchester town centre, and includes housing, a creative business centre, hotel, restaurant, bars, shops, health club with rooftop swimming pool, as well as a vibrant public realm of interlinked spaces. the old bus garage will be converted into a covered public space for daytime markets and night time performances.
