Design statement

Since the nineties contemporary architecture has increasingly been confronted by two contradicting developments, which can be seen on all levels and working fields. On one hand architects are requested to design neutral and anonymous buildings that can easily be changed for other uses, these buildings have to be able to respond to changing economic situations and have to be adaptable to different programs. On the other hand architects are asked to create very specific buildings that are easy to identify; this kind of architecture has to appeal to the user through a unique use of form and space. Atelier Kempe Thal consciously takes this modem paradox as the point of departure for their work. Thus the office is able to create architecture that is neutral and inexpensive as well as enjoyable and innovative. By using this paradox our buildings will be able to express the hidden vitality of our time.

Profile

Atelier Kempe Thill is specialized in public building, housing and urban planning. We are also active in the fields of research scenarios, exhibition design and publishing The office prefers to participate in the design process from the earliest stage possible so we can shift the emphasis from just solving problems to searching for the right questions. Throughout the building process Atelier Kempe Thill cooperates with various technical advisors. This allows us to investigate the different possibilities the design offers and to search for new technical limits; we are able to develop new solutions for the spatial organization and detailing of the building whilst operating within the given - often limited - budget. We combine the enjoyment of designing with professional management. The quality of our work is important therefore Atelier Kempe Thill prefers to work on a full-commission-basis during the whole design and building process which allows the office to guarantee a good result .
